The information obtained from Google Analytics helps you plan your content strategy, optimize your website, and perform better than your competitors. If you are not using Google Analytics on your website, you are missing a huge opportunity.
Don’t worry. In this article, I will guide you through creating a Google Analytics account and cover step by step to set up Google Analytics with MonterInsights, a best and free Google Analytics plugin for WordPress.

To use Google Analytics, the first step is to sign up for an account. If you have a Google account, it will take a couple of minutes to create your Google Analytics account. If you don’t have one, pause for a moment, and create a new Google account.
If you already have a Google account, follow the given steps to sign up for Google Analytics.
Step #1: At first, visit the Google Analytics homepage. You need to enter your account information.
Step #2: Sign in using your Google account details. After successful login, you will see a screen as shown below.
Step #3: Click on Sign up button. On the next screen, you need to add details for the Account name, the traffic you want to measure on (choose Web ), and then some details regarding your site, as shown below.
Once you have entered the details, click on the Create button. A popup will appear with terms and conditions. Read the terms and conditions and click on, I Accept .
On the next screen, you will see the tracking code, as shown below.
At this point, you have successfully signed up for Google Analytics. Now, it’s time to set up on your website.
To set up Google Analytics, you’ve to insert the Google Analytics tracking code on your site. For this purpose, we’ll use MonterInsights.
MonsterInsights is a popular Google Analytics plugin that quickly connects with your Google Analytics account. It shows your website analytics reports right inside your WordPress dashboard.
With MonterInsights, you don’t need to worry about copy and pasting the code. Instead, you need to authenticate it with your Google Analytics account, and it takes care of the technical aspects.
Of course, you need to install the MonterInsights plugin to get started. As this plugin is available free, it is available in the WordPress repository.
To install and activate the plugin, navigate to Plugins > Add New from your dashboard. Search for “ monsterinsights ”. It will appear first in the search result. Simply click on the Install Now and then on the Activate button.
Once you activate the plugin, you will be redirected to the setup wizard page, as shown below.
Click on the Launch the Wizard! Button to start the setup of MonterInsights. On the next screen, you’ve to choose your website category. Choose the one that is applicable for your site and click on Save and Continue .
Next, you’ll be prompted to connect your Google Analytics account. Click on Connect MonterInsights .
After that, you’ll be redirected to the Google login page. Log in with the account associated with Google Analytics to authenticate the plugin.
Now, you’ll need to allow MonterInsights some permissions.
After that, you’ll need to pick a profile of your site to complete the connection. If you’ve multiple websites connected to your Google Analytics, you’ll see on the dropdown list. Here you’ll need to choose the right website property.
Once you do that, click on the Complete Connection button.
It’ll take a couple of seconds to finalize the authentication process. After that, it’ll take you back to the MonsterInsights setup page. Here, you’ll see the recommended settings for the Google Analytics plugin.
On this setup page, you’ll see the following settings:
- Events Tracking – Enabled by default
- Enhanced Link Attribution – Enabled by default.
- File Download Tracking – Most used file types (doc,exe,js,pdf,ppt,tgz,zip,xls) are added by default. You can add more.
If you scroll down further, you’ll see additional settings.
- Affiliate Link Tracking – To track your affiliate links. Two are added by default. You can also add more.
- Access to MonsterInsights’s Reports – Choose who can see your analytics reports.
- Automatic Plugin Updates – Set to false by default. You can enable it if you want the plugin to be updated automatically.
- Help Us Improve – Set to false by default. If you enable it, it will send the information about your site to improve the plugin.
Review these settings and configure them as per your preference. Then, click on the Save and Continue button.
On the next screen, you’ll see the list of some recommended add-ons. If you’ve purchased their Pro version, you can install the recommended add-ons. Otherwise, simply click on the Save and Continue button.
After that, the plugin recommends you to install WPForms, a popular contact form, plugin.
You can click on Continue & Install WPForms button to install the plugin or simply click on Skip this step .
Now, you’ll see a new screen with a message “Awesome, You’re All Set!”. It confirms that the setup process is complete and you’ve successfully set up Google Analytics in your WordPress site.
On this screen, you’ll find the information that it will take a few hours to 24 hours to show your analytics report on your website. It also informs if there’re any steps you need to take to avoid errors.
Finally, click on Finish Setup and Exit Wizard button to complete the setup.
It takes a couple of hours or days for Google Analytics to collect your data and show the metrics on your WordPress dashboard. Wait for some time and return to your website to see your analytics metrics.
You can view a summary of your website analytics reports in the MonsterInsights dashboard widget.
To view the full report, navigate to Insights > Reports from your dashboard. Here, you’ll see the overview report of your website.
If you scroll down further below, you will see some additional reports which include:
- New vs. Returning Visitors – The difference between your new and old visitors
- Device Breakdown – Device used for browsing your site
- Top 10 Countries – Countries from where you have most visitors
- Top 10 Referrals – Source of traffic to your website
- Top Posts/ Pages – Your most visited posts and pages
